Heat Therapy

Heat Therapy

Although ice therapy is most typically  used in the reduction of swelling, it is heat therapy that is used for muscle relaxation and for increased circulation. Ice and heat therapy are both used for pain reduction.

Heat therapy is utilized in patients experiencing long lasting or chronic pain. It involves many different applications which can include basic heating pads, heating wraps, warm gel packs, and more advanced treatment options like therapeutic ultrasound.

Back injuries often result in stiffness and tension in the soft tissues and muscles of the lumbar area otherwise referred to as the lower back. It is often the case that as a result circulation becomes restricted. This type of tension can turn into intense spasms.

Heat Therapy:

  • Assists in reducing discomfort by restricting the pain signals which reach the brain.
  • Dilates blood vessels in the muscles which let them relax and start to heal.
  • Increases the muscle’s ability to stretch easily, thus reducing immobility and stiffness.

Both heat therapy and ice therapy are regularly used in comprehensive chiropractic treatment plans and result in marked improvements.

Heat therapy should not be used on patients who have bruised or swollen tissues, or for those with dermatitis, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, peripheral vascular disease, cardiovascular conditions like hypertension, or open wounds.
